If you’re reading this, there is a good possibility that you are newly engaged. If that’s the case, first we want to say congratulations! This is such an exciting time in your life and can go by just like *that*. We always encourage our couples to really soak in this moment and enjoy it while it lasts. With that being said, if you’re a photo fanatic (cuz same), you may be already planning your engagement photoshoot. Where it will be, who will take your photos *cough cough*, and most importantly, what to wear to your engagement session. Trust me, as much as we don’t like to admit we do not want a fashion emergency. Especially when it comes to this kind of celebration! Below are just some of the hottest engagement photo tips on what to wear to your engagement session so you’re looking sharp, confident, and STUNNIN’.
One of the biggest pieces of advice when it comes to choosing your engagement outfits is to wear what you feel comfortable in. What is the point of getting dressed up and fancy just to feel completely out of place and uncomfortable? Newsflash, your being uncomfortable WILL translate in front of the camera. That’s why we do everything in our power to make you feel calm, cool, and collected during this process so you are photographed in your most genuine and authentic self.
If you are someone who say, doesn’t wear dresses. Do not believe that you need to wear a dress to your engagement session, especially if this isn’t your vibe. While we are not necessarily saying that coming in basketball shorts and sneakers is our recommendation, we are saying that you don’t need to go so far out of your comfort zone that it feels completely unnatural. Getting professional photos taken can be intimidating enough, you don’t need to be adding on more pressure!
Okay, so hear us out. Neutrals, while not the most fun and “out there” choice for your engagement outfits, maybe the most practical! Especially if you’re planning on taking your engagement photos outdoors where the backdrop may be a bit busier. You want to be able to compliment your engagement location and not clash with it. Neutrals go with just about anything and are flattering on just about anyone. So when in doubt, ride the neutral train and you will be heading in the right direction!
You ever look at a photo and can’t quite put your finger on what looks off? It could be because someone in the photo is wearing a very distracting pattern or a heavily pronounced logo. Don’t get me wrong, in everyday life, there is nothing wrong with wearing patterns and logos. However, when it comes to your engagement photos it can lead to a lot of distractions within the photo.
For those of you who don’t know, the season in which you take your engagement photos matter! This will help in determining what type of attire is appropriate for the season. An engagement photo tip for you is to always dress for the season. You may want to wear those open-toed sandals of yours, but depending on where you are located this might not be the best option during peak winter weather. Same thing with heavy sweaters and thick thermals. We are in Arizona and it can get *hot* here, so choosing clothing that is appropriate for the weather and season will save you a ton!
Spring/Summer – Aim to wear more breathable and airier type clothing. The weather is warming up and you don’t want to have huge sweat stains or be completely uncomfortably hot.
Fall/Winter – Aim to wear clothing that is a bit more comfy and cozy. Long sleeves, sweaters, scarves, coats, hats/gloves, etc. The colder the weather, the more you will have to bundle up however, this makes for some great props/accessories for your engagement shoot!
*Keep in mind that we live in Arizona where it can get VERY warm here. Please dress appropriately depending on where you currently live and the kinds of temperatures it reaches.
I’m just going to come right out and say it, matching outfits can be SOOOO early 2000s. Which, if that’s the look that you are going for then go right ahead! However, nowadays we highly suggest leaning away from matching with your partner, but rather compliment each other instead. You can do this by having one of you choose your outfit and the other base their outfit on the other. This way you’re not wearing matching clothing pieces, but choosing items of clothing that complement each other.
An example is if your SO is wearing a blue dress, maybe opt to wear blue pants and a white button-up shirt. You are keeping the tones relatively the same and neutral, and not clashing with each other. This leads to a more cohesive overall look for your engagement photos which you will thank us for in the long run!
We always recommend our couples aim to bring two different outfits to their engagement photoshoot. This is because we want to give your photos their spotlight, so rather than only focusing on a more formal engagement look or a more casual engagement look… we do both! Now, keep in mind that this may be different for each photographer. Some photographers may only have time to include one set of outfits because you do need to take into account outfit changes. So please always ask your photographer if you can have one or two outfits. For us, we are almost always willing to make an outfit change work.
As for what to bring for your two outfits, we recommend bringing a more casual outfit and a more formal outfit. That way you are able to get the best of both worlds and essentially get two types of photos within one session!
This little engagement tip is especially important if you’re planning on having an adventure engagement session. No matter what though, you want to ensure that you are choosing clothing items that you can move in! Sounds pretty self-explanatory, but you’d be surprised by the lengths that you will go to look cute in your photos – lol.
Make sure that whatever you choose to wear to your engagement session, it’s breathable and moveable for both you and your partner. You want to be able to not feel constricted and confined and overall just want to be comfy and cute!
The biggest engagement session tip that I can give you is to remember to have fun with it! This time of your life can seriously fly by and before you know it, you’ll be walking down the aisle. So while we are there along the way to make sure you get the most beautiful photos imaginable, don’t stress too much about it. We are here to have fun and make beautiful magic, so live it up!
