If you have been around for a while, you know I absolutely love coming to Lost Dutchman State park! Located in the Phoenix metro, this state park is a favorite for so many reasons! However, my favorite reason that I recommend a Lost Dutchman engagement session for couples is because it truly embodies everything that Arizona is – golden skies, desert, and mountains!
Lost Dutchman State Park is located at the base of the Superstition Mountains in the Sonoran Desert. It is very easy to get turned around on the trails, so I always suggest grabbing a map beforehand or booking with an Arizona Photographer (like myself) that is well versed with the area.
Location: 6109 N Apache Trail, Apache Junction, AZ 85119
Hours: Open year-round from 6am to 8pm *You must be out of the park before it closes*
Visitor Center: 6am to 4pm *hours are different during holidays, so I encourage you to visit here for updated hours.
Permit: As of 2024 guidelines, you do not need a permit for photography.
Parking: $10 per vehicle or $3 per bicycle Pro Tip: when the visitors center is closed, you must bring exact payment to use at the self pay station
Dogs Allowed?: YES!
You’re going to want to avoid Lost Dutchman State Park during the summer! This time of year is insanely hot, there is potential flooding, and encounters with desert animals.
However, if you really want to do a session during the summer months, I recommend a sunrise session! Sunrise sessions at this spot are amazing because the sun rises right over the mountains, giving off a beautiful golden light. It does warm up quickly once the sun is up, though.
These are the seasons that I often recommend to couples for an engagement session:
Winter: In winter, from December to February, anticipate daytime highs in the 60s to 70s and nighttime lows in the 40s. If you plan to capture sunrise or sunset photos, be sure to bring extra layers for warmth.
Spring: During spring, from March to mid-May, temperatures usually range from the 70s to 80s for highs and dip into the 50s for lows. This season is particularly lovely, especially following periods of rainfall, as it brings forth stunning wildflowers in abundance.
I also suggest that couples consider scheduling their session on weekdays if feasible, to steer clear of the weekend crowds who visit to the park.
These tips will help enhance your engagement photos while ensuring comfort in the desert environment.
1. Choose light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool.
2. Opt for earth tones such as beige, khaki, olive green, or sandy hues.
3. Layer with a jacket, scarf, or hat for added dimension and sun protection.
4. Wear comfortable footwear suitable for desert terrain, like flat sandals or boots.
5. Avoid overly formal attire; keep it relaxed and natural.
6. Coordinate outfits with your partner for a cohesive look.
7. Consider the time of day for lighting and temperature changes.
8. Express your personal style to feel confident during the shoot.
