4 Tips for Hiking Engagement Photos near the Superstition Mountains

Searching for the perfect location to capture hiking engagement photos without an audience? I have the spot for you! Peralta trail near the superstition mountains was a breathtaking location to celebrate Carissa and Phillips engagement. In this blog, I am sharing 4 things you need to know to prepare for your hiking engagement photos near the superstition mountains!

What to bring for Hiking Engagement Photos in Arizona

When it comes to your hiking engagement session, there’s a bunch of stuff you could bring along. Just make sure to grab what you think you’ll need and leave behind anything you won’t! Here’s a handy list that I usually suggest when couples are planning an adventure engagement session:

  • Shoes to Hike in
  • Shoes to switch into at the top of the trail
  • Outfit to change into if needed
  • A small towel/blanket to sit on to change shoes so your outfit doesn’t get dirty
  • A comb/brush to touch up your hair before taking photos
  • Water to hydrate throughout the hike
  • Snacks for fuel to power up after the hike
  • A headlamp when planning sunrise/sunset photos

What to wear for your engagement photos outdoors

Don’t forget to pack layers every time you head out! Up in the mountains, it can get pretty chilly, especially when you’re hiking up for sunrise or coming back down after sunset. If you’re thinking of wearing a dress, go for something like a sundress or a maxi dress to steer clear of any windy wardrobe malfunctions.

When you’re taking engagement photos in nature, they’re naturally gorgeous. But when you’re picking out what to wear, think about choosing bright colors that pop against the background. Like, if you’re by the Superstition Mountains with all those tan and orange colors, don’t wear something that matches too much. Instead, go for bold colors that look good with the scenery but don’t disappear into it.

Do your research on the location

Before you head out, it’s smart to do some research about the location. Check if you need any photo permits, figure out where to park, see how tough the trail is, find out when it gets busy, and team up with a photographer who knows the area inside out.

Pro Tip: If you’re wanting to get professional wedding or elopement photos taken in the Lost Dutchman’s State Park, you will need to apply for a permit, here! This park no longer needs a photo permit for engagements!

Be prepared for the weather

With any adventure engagement session, weather is going to be a factor. The best time of year for engagement photos near the Superstition Mountains depends on your preferences and the weather patterns of the region.

  • Spring (March to May): Pleasant temperatures with wildflowers in bloom and vibrant greenery
  • Summer (June to August): Superstition Mountains can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100°F (38°C). Plan to start early in the morning to avoid the heat!
  • Fall (September to November): Pleasant, but cooler temperatures with vibrant foliage
  • Winter (December to February): Mild daytime temperatures and clear skies. Just be prepared for cooler mornings and evenings, especially at higher elevations. If choosing a sunrise/sunset session, you’ll want to wear layers for the hike!

Overall, I absolutely love when couples choose a hiking engagement session because there are so many opportunities to capture genuine, candid moments and the views are always incredible in and around Arizona’s mountain regions!
