Things to Know Before Your Sedona Cathedral Rock Engagement Photos

Best time of Year to Visit

As a local that has been visiting Cathedral Rock for many years, this destination has become incredibly popular (for a good reason). Luckily, there are still a few options to create those engagement photos that make you feel like it’s you and your lover against the world.

  • Weekday’s
  • Weekend’s at sunrise (sunset is a very popular time to visit)
  • During the Winter season (November-February)

What to Wear During Your Adventure Engagement Photos at Sedona Cathedral Rock

For adventure engagement shoots like this, I suggest couples opt for comfy hiking gear they don’t mind getting a bit dirty. With red rocks in the mix, expect some red dirt! Plus, if it’s been rainy, the hike gets trickier. So, make sure your shoes have good traction to avoid slips.

  • Hiking Distance: 1.2 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 742 ft.
  • Difficulty: Moderate

You can find more information about what to expect on the hike to Cathedral Rock, here.

Aggie and Oscar were fearless and attempted the hike in their engagement outfit! (It was a success!) They did choose to pack extra shoes to switch into at the top of the trailhead.

Where to Park for a Cathedral Rock Engagement Session

Before you visit, you’re going to want to purchase a Red Rock Pass, it’s only $5 and gets you access to the trailhead for the day! As I mentioned earlier, with the trail gaining popularity, parking is getting tight. There are only 2 small parking lots at the Cathedral Rock trailhead, so plan to arrive early for your engagement shoot to secure a spot! If it’s packed, you will need to park at the Templeton or Baldwin trail parking lot and hike to Cathedral Rock from there.

Better to come Over-Prepared than Under-Prepared

For any hiking engagement shoot, make sure you’ve got the essentials! Pack a first aid kit, snacks, water, a touch-up kit, an extra bag for your outfit, and don’t forget a flashlight or headlamp for those sunrise/sunset shots.

Aggie’s dress was stunning against those beautiful red rocks!
